Frequently asked questions about parquet sanding in the Zurich area
How often can you sand a parquet floor?
Solid parquet can be sanded 4–6 times, depending on its thickness, as the wear layer is usually 4–6 mm thick. Multi-layer parquet with a 2.5 mm wear layer can be sanded 1–2 times. We measure the remaining wear layer thickness on site before we start sanding.
Do we have to clear out all the furniture?
No, not necessarily. We use low-dust sanders with direct extraction. In two-zone flats, furniture can be moved from room to room. Of course, it’s quickest in completely empty properties — please do get in touch to discuss your situation.
What is the difference between oil and varnish?
Oiled parquet has a more natural look and can be repaired in small areas, but needs to be refreshed every 2–3 years. Varnished parquet is easier to maintain and water-resistant, but if damaged, the entire surface must be revarnished. We will discuss the best option with you based on how you intend to use the floor.
How long does the grinding take?
For an 80-m² flat, allow 2–3 working days — Day 1: sanding and filling; Day 2: second sanding and first coat of sealant; Day 3: final coat of sealant. The floor can be walked on after 24 hours and is fully load-bearing after 7 days.
Is it worth having it resanded, or is it better to replace it?
Sanding usually costs 40–60 % less than a new floor and preserves the original character. It’s worth replacing the floor if the wear layer is too thin, the floor has water damage or large, deep holes, or if you simply want to change the material. We’ll come and take a look on site and give you our honest opinion on what makes the most sense.
