Frequently asked questions about laying laminate flooring in the Zurich area

What is the difference between laminate flooring and parquet?

Laminate consists of a laminated chipboard core with a photo print, whilst parquet is made of real wood. Laminate is cheaper and more resistant to scratches and light, but cannot be sanded down. Parquet looks more upmarket, can be refinished several times and, with proper care, will last 30+ years.

Which laminate class should I choose?

AC3/AC4 (Class 22–23) is sufficient for standard residential areas. Rooms subject to heavy wear or smaller commercial spaces require AC5 (Class 32–33), whilst retail spaces require AC6 (Class 34). We recommend a suitable rating depending on the room’s intended use — please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.

Can laminate flooring be laid in the bathroom or kitchen?

Standard laminate flooring is not suitable for wet areas. There is special waterproof laminate with welded edges; alternatively, we recommend vinyl or design flooring. In the kitchen (where there is splashing water), AC4+ laminate with silicone joints is usually acceptable.

How long does the installation take?

We can lay flooring in an 80-m² flat in one working day, including skirting boards and transition strips. Prerequisite: the subfloor must be level and dry. If the subfloor requires preparation, this will add half a day to the job.

Is it worth having it resanded, or is it better to replace it?

Sanding usually costs 40–60 % less than a new floor and preserves the original character. It’s worth replacing the floor if the wear layer is too thin, the floor has water damage or large, deep holes, or if you simply want to change the material. We’ll come and take a look on site and give you our honest opinion on what makes the most sense.
